Hi all, A Christmas present of Mike Carlton's 'First Victory' (an account of the encounter between HMAS Sydney vs. SMS Emden is getting me all fired up for the kick off for the 100th anniversary of the Great War this year. link I know some early war naval battles are going to feature in my wargaming schedule over the next year or two – if nothing else its a terrific reason to build up my 1:2400 WWI collection. I'm interested to hear of the plans of other TMPers to commemorate WWI naval history for the anniversaries to come (or, have we already had this conversation elsewhere?). |

I am thinking of doing the battle on the Falklands 1914 this year. I need to find other small engagements 1 for each year. so I need 1 for 1915 for next year Rich. |

I've got to start putting my thinking cap on to do something, especially since my grandfather was there in 1914 as a boy sailor. I'll have to find the list of ships he was on and try to tie down where he saw action. So far I know he was at Jutland, but for earlier battles I don't recall. |

Once I catch up with some projects, I have a handful of early war figures I should paint up to do some skirmish stuff from the very beginning of the war. |

I have a few 28mm 1914 Germans and French I plan to use with some skirmish rules. I'm waiting to see what Baccus and Battlefront put out. |

I have a game already lined up where poor old Admiral Troubridge actually gets a crack at the Goeben off Messina. |

During the Scarborough operation in Dec. 1914, Jellico wanted to take the whole Grand Fleet out for the operation. Churchill, with his usual bad luck at decision making, figured 6 battleships some cruisers and some destroyers would be enough. Fortunately, the High Seas Fleet fled at the sight of a handful of destroyers. Anyone have a listing of ships available at that time? Long ago I worked out something like 17 Dreadnoughts, the King Edwards, and perhaps 8 armored cruisers. But that was a guesstimate. Would have been a pretty close match up. |

I may collect and play a what-if of the brewing Greek-Ottoman War that was supposed-to happen around 1914. 2 Modern Dreadnoughts per side (Salamis and a Bretagne Class vs. Agincourt and Erin) plus an assortment of old pre-dreads (Averoff vs. Torgut Reis and Barbarossa). For WWI I probably will commemorate it via board-wargames. And I am basing one of the grad courses I am teaching this semester around it. |

An interesting what-if for everyone is a French convoy caught by the Goeben in the Mediterranean due to faulty intelligence, and the French pre-dreadnought escorts have to try and keep the faster, more modern Goeben away from the transports
I do recall the Imperial Russian Navy giving the Goeben a hard time with their pre dreadnoughts in the Black Sea thanks to some innovative group fire control, so I don't rule anything out with those wily French

Need to paint up the rest of my WW1 British and Germans and then work on my WW1 Baltic Russian fleet. I'm on the fence re getting Italians and Austro-Hungarians at this point. I'm noticing that GHQ is really getting into the WW1 Med now. Need to make up a scenario or two for a convention next spring. |
