I am making up some forces for early WWI and I want to make some of the machine gun carriages used by the cavalry. Specifically for the French and Germans. I have an image of a French carriage from one of the Funcken books, but it is a poor quality image and Funcken's detail is often suspect. Can anyone point me to some photographs or, better still, some plans? |

I've some pictures collected in a Pinterest folder: link I've not found many pictures on the subject. I planned on doing a German horse-borne MG team at one point myself. For artillery and horse harness in general I've found this site to be really interesting and useful: lovettartillery.com |

There's a drawing of a French cavalry model on page 3 of _God Damn this War_ by Jaques Tardi. You can see it on Amazon preview here: link |

The cart referred to by Jeff Ewing looks like a bit like a 75mm ammunition caisson with a MG on top. Interesting. Thanks for that Jeff! |

Old Glory makes a British Maxim on cavalry carriage that looks very similar to the one above. The gun itself would need to be replaced, though. link |

From the reading I have done, it is still not 100% clear how MG limbers were actually used. There is definite evidence from German sources that cavalry MG limbers could travel in the advance guard of a cavalry force. On one occasion near Le Cateau, a cavalry MG team came into action with the gun/s still mounted on the limber/s. With British and French cavalry, there was specialised equipment that enabled MGs to be carried dismantled on horses. Typically the load of a single MG was distributed across two horses IIRC. This enabled MGs to travel with the squadrons rather than further back with the various wagons. Robert |
