So my 3mm minis arrived for a project I've been working on – filling out a Brigade-sized SF TO&E I wrote up over the past few weeks. I've gone into the background of how I assembled this project ad infinitum elsewhere on TMP, but now I'm getting heavily into the miniatures. This is a T228H Hover MBT. I chose the blue and white scheme for visibility (the assumption being, from the "In-Universe" scheme, that the gaming surface is a Command Post Holo-Sim of the battle area, and the minis are your unit icons, assigned appropriate visibility colors. I pushed the blue much farther than I normally would have, but once committed, I think it came out pretty well. This is mainly a test of the flocking and basing scheme. Nothing is set in stone, and I'd love to hear general thoughts before I dive into the main force.
For starters I think I'm going to boost the contrast on the unit label on the base. It reads a bit dark to me. I'm also wondering whether the flocking works or not. The colors contrast well enough, but it seems slightly
Hm. Not sure. |

I agree it does seem off somehow. Here is a radical thought
If the table is just a holo-sim of the actual battlefield
Could you not use plain coloured bases, or maybe go swanky with some custom cut coloured acrylic? It would avoid the flock issues and be quicker, the labels would stand out more and it would feel a bit more holographic? The blue is just right. |

The blue is great. I'd try white lines for the tank's map symbol, the black-on-blue doesn't work well. |

Looks pretty good
maybe a light wash of black ? |

For basing, you might consider some custom-made tokens with your unit info already printed; you could use a printed grass texture instead of flocking as well. I have some designed for my 3mm AIW units (haven't had them made yet); Zekim does a very good job with the printing, and using their custom designer software lets you roll your own: zekimstudios.com |

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I'm going to touch up the paint (the wash is a great idea, L4, and I'm going to touch up some gun barrels, etc). These are some alternatives for the base options. Plain black, and a coarser, red-brown contrast (which I'll touch up with a little green turf I think). On the second, I also boosted the contrast on the base label, which is much easier to read, now.
This is an example of the "final" high-contrast base I may use, from a set I assembled for a Fulda Gap scenario that never was.

Very nice work! I particularly like the light blue label! I agree with Legion 4, however, that you need to do something to highlight the surface of the miniature more and make it pop out. I would not suggest a black wash, however: a dark blue ink, perhaps. Alternatively, you could add a brighter color to the panels and/or edges. Here are two versions of the same tank, following the painting tutorial passed to me by the redoubtable Nogenon (which I need to publish here): link These are painted up for Sally's Army at 1 fig per 5 vehicles. The regiment in back is painted in a similar fashion to what you've done (medium base, dark wash, light dry brush), with one added step: the raised greeblies on the hull and turret, as well as the corners of the skirt, got a touch-up with neon green. The regiment in front got a more ambitious paint job. Here, all the panels on the hull and turret were very carefully touched up with neon green. I much prefer the second scheme to the first, but it takes about three times as long to produce (as Nogenon warned me)! I'm keeping both paint jobs, however, as it allows me to easily identify the regiments at a glance. In any case, this gives you an idea of how you can make these figures pop without using washes. |

The project is going forward. I finalized my basing scheme, based on the colors of the terrain tiles I'm making, and a decent amount of contrast for the paint scheme.
Here's the first company in the paint shop. Primed with brush-on primer and given the first base coat of sapphire blue. In the upper right, you can see one of the unit's two Oscar-class cybertanks, waiting patiently for his turn on the line.

First company of the Armor Section, almost done. Just have to black the treads and base them. Easy, huh? Oy.
