Played a game of the new WFB supplement last night and had plenty of fun.
Some thoughts over on the blog:

Interesting observation about competitive/tournament versus casual gaming appeal. There is more buzz building lately, it seems, on this issue with the 40k crowd. This appears to be a hot-button topic at this juncture for GW

I only play 'casual' warhammer games – the whole tournament thing turns me off.

Space Monkey31 Dec 2013 4:38 p.m. PST

Yeah, no 'tournaments' for me, ever… so this actually looks fun. I wonder if it would be adaptable to earlier versions such as 3rd?

Also: 'Casual' seems to be gamer parlance for somehow being a lesser being… just because I don't want to play World of Warcraft like it's my job… or study 40K stats like I'm preparing for the LSAT. Usually the guys who refer to other players as 'casual' are not the sort I want to be playing anything with.

I only play 'friendly' games too – of course I'm trying to win when I do, but not at all costs and I will frequently use less optimal models purely because they look good. Heck I play Beastmen for Gawd's sake so how important can winning be lol (okay, this is in addition to Dark Elves but I've had my Dark Elf army for over a decade so this is no bandwagon jumping going on lol) *and* I have used all the Beastmen Rares too which are horribly overcosted….but they look *awesome* which is what matters most to me :)

Yeah, I'm all about style over winning too. Doesn't help that my dice hate me.
I'm looking to start playing 8th now that rumor has it that GW is putting off the new edition.

I can honestly say that I've enjoyed the hell out of 8th Ed more than any other edition I've played in the last fifteen years, and the fantasy scene at my local club has never been better. Before that (pre-2000) the rose tinted glasses come out because those were 'the good old days' and are heavily colored by nostalgia :)

How substantial is the rumor that they are putting off a new version of Warhammer (9th).

Thanks to 8th edition we have stopped playing. Lots of figures sitting on the sidelines.

I've enjoyed every edition except 8th (some more or less but 8th is only edition which caused everyone to quit playing).

We have been waiting for 9th and hoping for the best (we have liked 7 out of 8 editions so figured the odds were 7-1 for an improvement – it couldn't get worse).

But if no new edition is forthcoming, I guess its time to give up and remount for other systems.

I stopped at 8th edition as well. Me & very few friends ate still playing 7th rules with 6th or 7th army books. I'm too heavily invested to get out if it entirely. For the record, I bailed out midway through 4th Edition because the group I was with got carried away with the "Hero Hammer" lists. I credit that respite for my 4 Warhammer Ancients armies. It seems most gamers are cut throat players anyway, so I don't feel like I'm missing much playing my edition in a much smaller gaming circle.
