Does anyone have any experience on 3D software for the mac. I have the resources for the miniatures, I just need to turn them into something real.

Thank you
Jon

Most of the 'artistic' ones run on a mac: Maya, Modo, Blender, Zbrush, Mudbox etc. Some of the industrial/CAD ones do not, like rhino and solidworks. (Although a rhino port to OSX is being worked on.)

Zbrush is good on the Mac. It is also a popular one with 3d printing. Mud box would be my second choice.

It is not really any faster to sculpt on the computer than in real world products. If you have the resources, as you mention, explore both options.

Zbrush and Mudbox are geared more towards organic shapes, such as humans and animals. If you're looking at vehicles, I'd recommend a polygonal/subdivision modeler like Modo, Lightwave, or 3DS Max – and all of these can handle free-form sculpting but not as well as Zbrush or Mudbox.

If cost is a factor, and you don't mind banging your head on a horrible interface, open source programs like Blender will work for both organic and polygonal models. Another option is Sketchup for polygonal only.

I am looking at ships and vehicles.

I was looking at Sketchup but the price was a high considering I knew nothing about the software.

Moi3D is a great cad-style modeler, and cheap. Sketchup is stupidly expensive, and can't do curved surfaces very well.

For organic, ZBrush is the best around. So many tools.
