Thanks, Always liked Chainmail rules.

I found Chainmail massed combat tables online – never played the game. A question: It says men armed with pike/halberd add an extra die. Is that per unit? Per figure? Or does each combat die add an extra die?

For example, 12 heavy infantry with halberds face heavy horse. They get 3 dice, one per four figures. Is the halberd bonus 1 (per unit), 12 (per figure) or 3 (per combat dice)?

You simply add the die to the total. Simple example. A unit gets 1 die per figure but can add 1 die. Then it would get 2 dice per figure. OR lets say a unit gets 1 die per 2 figures. Add 1 die would be 2 dice per 2 figures. Finally, lets say you get 1 die per 3 figures. Add an extra die would be 2 dice per 3 figures.

My first set of rules!

Thanks for sharing them with us.

I'll take a look.

What things have you changed about the rules, from the original set?

Don't have much time to look at them in depth tonight, but at first pass, they do look promising.

Any chance you can create a one page (front and back), quick reference sheet, in smaller print, for us to use?

I find those really help keep games moving, especially when you are playing the rules for the first few times, or when teaching them to others.

What things have you changed about the rules, from the original set?

1) Missile fire was changed. You take casualties at the same rate as before but instead of rolling 1 die and consulting a table to see what you did, you just roll 1 die per figure shooting and each hit causes a casualty.

2) Post melee resolution was greatly simplified. It is still a work in progress.

3) The fantasy combat system was dropped. All monsters and heroes now just take wounds and these can be accumulated from turn to turn. In the original game a character and most monsters were not killed unless they took all of their wounds in 1 turn. Otherwise, those hits were dropped.

4) Man to Man combat is based on a D20 to make it easy to integrate into an RPG if desired.

Any chance you can create a one page (front and back), quick reference sheet, in smaller print, for us to use?

There is a 3 page QRS at the end of the document. One page is for massed combat. One page is for man to man combat and the other page is to cover the common stuff. So you can do a front and back QRS for the kind of game you are trying to play.
