Sadly, Gareth, one of our members passed away on Boxing day. He was a friend and an enthusiastic wargamer.
My blog has more details: link

Norman D Landings28 Dec 2013 4:38 p.m. PST

Don't know what to say. This is really upsetting.

Gareth was just a kid.
He was a breath of fresh air, and a pleasure to play with.

Think on how much he enjoyed participating in the club. You helped make his last years happier.

I agree with The Editor. You gave him some good gaming times.

About a decade ago, I was doing silly things like picking up UXO in Bosnia. A good friend of mine who was a critical care nurse in Philadelphia was diagnosed with Hep C and, along with other health problems, was going rapidly downhill.

He never let on how bad he was because he didn't want myself and another friend of ours, who was our Operations Officer, know how sick he was because he was worried that we would think about him rather than what we were doing.

I've always been amazed by those who are dealt these terrible health problems, but who just take them as something to work through and just carry on.

My best to you, your club and Gareth's family.

Eric

Sad news, especially to lose one so young.

Nine good years in the prime of his life. Sometimes that is all we can ask. My condolences.

herkybird, you and Norman as well as everyone who knew Gareth have my condolences and prayers. Perhaps the best thing to be said is that you both blessed each other with friendship and good company. That you feel sadness and loss at this time speaks well for both Gareth and you as well. God be with you and Gareth's family.

Very sorry for your loss. It's always a special kind of tragedy when something like this happens to such a young person.

Gonsalvo29 Dec 2013 8:37 a.m. PST

Always sad to lose anyone of our fraternity, but especially a young man. Plan a game in his honor when you're ready, perhaps?

Yesthatphil29 Dec 2013 9:43 a.m. PST

Sad story but I'm sure the wargames afforded him some fun and entertainment. RIP

Thanks for all the kind comments and wishes, I am sure Gareth would have been very moved by it all.

Gonsalvo, I had been painting lots of African animals for a safari game, which Gareth very much wanted to do. I only realised later that Gareth died about the time I finished painting the last figures (within an hour apparently).
I think we will probably do this as a remembrance?
