Can anyone give me any uniform, flag, organisation information on Peidmontese regiments that fought as allies of Austria in the build up to Marengo? I'm reading "Marengo and Hohenlinden: Napoleon's Rise to Power" by James Arnold, and although he mentions the Peidmontese battalions were Austrian allies, he doesn't give any other information. Any ideas? Colin |

Interesting army. Finished painting mine up last month along with a 1795 Batavian (Holland) army. Both in 25mm Foundry modified. Maybe the only one in the western USA. Plans for photos on the blog in the new year once the flags/standards finished along with some supporting cavalry. The Italian site linked by Prince of Essling above is the best source unless you can find the out of print books used for that internet link. I have tried several actions and battles of this 1796 era. Fun and small in scale. Several battalions on each side actions (in the most part) till the French republicans started to advance into the Po river valley. Many forget that Sardinia/Piedmont had been fighting the French for several years before General Bonaparte's arrival. My 1796 scenario attempts posted on blog along with several other linked sources found and used: link Battles of Dego 1796 scenario AAR to be posted next. M aka WR |

The Piedmontese are definitely on our list for our Wars of the French Revolution range and could well be the next one up as soon as we finish Suvarov's Russians. Rob Eureka miniatures USA |

Hi What figures could be used (28mm) in your opinion? i was thinking, maybe, at Prussian 7YW (Elite for example) |

The miniatures I used for my Piedmontese/ Sardinian army were the older 25mm Foundry French revolution line (1990's era). They are closer to 25mm scale then the modern larger 28mm and work well with my Dixon French republicans. Mostly the uniform paintwork covered any minor uniform differences. Purists will have the buttons to work with and generally the black gaiters are above the knee. Not sure about the Piedmontese backpacks so they have french style in my army. If Eureka enlarges their present FRW line I would expect them to nicely fill the void. Trent miniatures are another company to look for different French style FRW miniatures to provide mixture in your tabletop units
. especially if you use the larger miniature counts of 24 or greater units. For my Batavian I used the same 25mm FRW line from Foundry. The grenadiers had a falling plume so I had to either convert or used the French grenadier standing "on guard duty" special miniature for my grenadier company. This was "on a whim project" so to speak
. something different to aid my French Republican army vs. the massed Allies. Also opens up the 1799 Holland campaign for future gaming. |
