I'm going to paint up some panzer grenadiers from 24th panzer in 1942. I think the only thing distinctive about their uniform is:
1) yellow ochre piping on the shoulder straps
2) for a few ancient veterans, yellow ochre backgrounds for the litzen

Is this correct?

In 1942 they are still schutzen. I didn't know they kept their cavalry waffenfarbe when they converted to a panzer division though, regulations for schutzen were grass green in 1942.

Isn't the author from the book Blood and Snow from the 24th? Sent Stalingrad area but not in the kessel.

By Stalingrad they were panzer grenadiers.

I'm not sure about them. I've read multiple sources state that the tankers and armored reconnaissance units kept the yellow (but I guess all armored recon had yellow), but nothing definitive on the panzer grenadiers. I've been assuming that the rationale for armored recon keeping yellow (they were once cavalry) would apply to the infantry also since they had been horsemen the previous year.

Not sure about the panzer grenadiers, but I recall reading that the 1/24 Panzer Regt were still wearing Yellow when they were serving as the 116th Panzer Division's Panther Battalion in France during summer and fall of 1944.
