We had a Napoleonic game on Wednesday using an altered version of Black Powder where the regiment was the brigade and each squadron was a small unit. The report can be found on my sons blog here:

Cavalry is very brittle in Black Powder. With the high attack value of some Napoleonic cavalry, combined with their movement rate, a clash between two forces composed of mostly cavalry is going to be over very quickly. It was a good looking game! |

Oh, no doubt it is very enjoyable. You can get several games in if you have a lot of cavalry battles to do sometimes. |

Well it was certainly a good try, and the result was at least a very handsome game! |

The flaw in most Napoleonic rules is the failure to represent cavalry operating by squadrons, as they always did in reality. In truth squadrons were a bit brittle, and needed to reform after a charge. It is good to see experimentation with rule systems to make them more accurate, even if the motivation was actually a lack of cavalry figures. Rod |

We use BP for our Nap games but do have a few house rules to add flavor and appease the club. The rules author tell you to add or take away rules to make your game fun and playable. Great combat photos

We've fought the initial 'skirmish' stages of a large battle using tiny units and 'regimental' commanders. This has been very successful – with 'broken' regiments reforming for the main battle as 'broken' regiments, otherwise they start with 1 stamina gone for each 'shaken' unit
.oops, now I'm adding house rules ;-) |

I have been thinking along similar lines but removing bases when the stats are reduced. Something along the lines of any unit reaching double its stamina drops down a size with stats adjusted accordingly. That's providing they survive their morale test of course. Our next club game is going to be our first game of Napoleonic command so this will have to wait. |
