"I think many PT enthusiasts have seen in books the photo of the sailor testing the six-barreled bazooka mounted on the dayroom canopy of an Elco 80-footer--here's more from that same set. This was an attempt to add more firepower to the PT boat to deal with the heavily armed and armored barges the Pacific boats were dealing with. However, I do believe the protective gear the sailor's wearing wouldn't be too popular in the tropics. To borrow a line from the miniseries Band of Brothers--"that dog just ain't gonna hunt

Do you remember where? Robert |

It was a book. Mosquito Fleet, IIRC. Got in the 60's, loaned it out and never saw it again. |

I remember reading that in school . It was a Scholastic Books selection back in the 70s. One of my first books on WWII. Robert |

Ya gotta wonder how this ever got to the operational stage without everyone falling off their chair with peals of laughter. From the same people who brought you sea-gulls trained to crap on perescopes, the Iceberg Aircraft carrier, and the grand Panjandrum. |

I dunno. The US military seemed to try and mount Bazookas on lots of things LOL.Alot of them through the average Joe's ingenuity. Robert |

Nope. This was tried out but never issued. I have not seen any operational pictures of Bazooka armed PTs. Still within the realm of possibility though but they sure would not have been common at all. Dave G |

Bazookas are far too short-ranged for naval use. The automatic 37mm swiped from a crashed P39 Airacobra was preferred for shooting up barges. |

Interestingly, the Germans mounted 8.6cm AA rocket launchers on a lot of their small craft late in the war. They could be used against small craft but so far no documented hits have emerged. |

Robert, looks like you and I started from the same exact book. I still have my Scholastic Books copy as well:) |
