One to be aware of if you were looking to visit the Imperial War Museum in the first half of 2014. From the Imperial War Museum website iwm.org.uk/visits/iwm-london 'IWM London is undergoing a major building redevelopment, transforming our museum to mark the Centenary of the First World War, and on 6 January the museum will close until July 2014.' The anniversary is why it is closed, so the rebuild (it is far more than a refurb) will be ready for the 100th anniversary. |

My wife, a friend and I got to visit the IWM in October of this year. Much of the museum was closed due to construction. We did get the opportunity walk through the "Extraordinary Heroes" exhibit which for the three of us made the visit very worthwhile. The exhibit was on the Victoria and George Crosses. The had on exhibit some 150+ of the awards. Each individual had a short description of why the award was made and a short factoid about the conflict, or branch of service etc. It was moving to read the reasons of the award and about the individual. At one point my friend and I were looking at all the awards that a solider had received in his life, the bling so to speak and down in the lower left corner was a small tarnished bronze medal with a maroon ribbon. That one small medal out weighed all the rest of the shiny gold and sliver medals and ribbons combined. It was very moving to realize what these extraordinary men and women did to earn this plain bronze medal. When the IWM reopens please make it a point to visit the "Extraordinary Heroes" exhibit. As indeed (in my opinion) are the National Army Museum in Chelsea and the RAF Museum in Hendon. |

we never made it to those. Had a Wonderful time at Duxford. they even had a X-craft Sub. you don't realize how big a Bren carrier is till you stand next to one. The IWM LONDON was always full of school groups running around. |

Thought the yogurt knitters had banned all teaching of the great moments in our history. And taking the little dears to an institution with the word 'Imperial' in it! Heads will roll. |

I'm a friend of the IWM and alot of planning has been going on around the modernization, the decision to close was not taken lightly. All of you that enjoy the history associated with our hobby should sign up as a "friend" of your local Museum its one of the excellent ways you can stay in touch and help protect our heritage. The costs are generally less than a tank of petrol, and most offer excellent talks and events to friends. |
