In the past, all of my commission work in 18mm has been based for Napoleon at War. Now I'm doing some figures for myself and I'm intrigued by the LaSalle basing system. It seems to give a good impression of the elbow-to-elbow infantry formations. If I'm reading the LaSalle material correctly, the key factor is the frontage – not the depth. If I go with the recommended base size of 45mm front and 30mm depth (for 8 figures) the front rank really masks the rear rank. A lot of painting effort is sort of hidden. If I go with the same 45mm front but increase the depth to 40mm I can open the figures up a little while basically preserving the formation "look". Any thoughts or advice gratefully received! Personal preference rules here. Lay out the figures both ways and see which one looks best. Or alternatively, do your A paint-job on the front half of the front rank and the back half of the back rank, and do your B or C paint-job on the rest. There is no wrong answer. |

We play FoGN, which has a standard base size of 40mm front x 30mm deep for 15/18mm (which I thought was the same as Lasalle uses, but I may be wrong here). Using 6 18mm infantry figures per base, the density and look is excellent IMO, especially if the figures are AB in mixed poses. Cheers Brett |

I play March Attack, which used 2 bases per unit of 8 infantry on a 40x30mm base. I think it is perfect, and I can see the rear rank fine. |

Go with whatever looks best to you. Depth is not critical in any case. |

The book does have suggestions for other basing schemes though, so you can play with figures based for Empire or NB. I based most of my line infantry with 8 figures on a base and light infantry with 6. Although I have a number of old units of 24 to rebase that I'll just go with 6 per base. Eric |

And here I am, planning on a 2"/50mm base width with 10 per base
Maybe I should just surrender now, and order a different batch of bases. |

I decided on 30mm square with 6 figures in 2 ranks. It has the aesthetic appeal of a 40mm wide base but I only have to paint 24 figures instead of 32! |

Sukhoi, as I understand it, many folks use 30mm square instead of the recommended 40 by 30. So you are definitely not alone. |

LaSalle makes suggestions for base width/depth. All of the game rules are based off of the chosen base width. With that said, lay out your figures on bases, find what seems the right feel for you and
go with it. With this in mind, you can even go with
wait for it
