Hi, I'm planning to game Shiloh come the spring, and wondered if there was any company that made 10mm models of gunboats in the same style as the Union made use of during the battle? Actually, even 6mm scale would be fine – I would only be using them for this one battle. Cheers, Christopher |

Christopher, Here you have a major problem between figure scale and model scale. In 10mm these models would be about 38cm long and about half that for 6mm. I would suggest using the 1/600 scale models from Bay Area Yards, they are accurate models and a great company to deal with: link The models will work out about 10cm long. The alternative is scratch building them: link link Elliott |

Hi Elliott, Thanks for the advice and the link – I think that size model was what I had vaguely had in mind as "6mm", and it looks like they will work nicely. They have a Tyler and Lexington, and it won't break the bank if I decide to expand riverine operations in the future. Cheers, Christopher |

Now that I think of it
if we play the battle at 1" = 100 yards ground scale, the ships would be less an inch long! But here the important thing is to have a nice looking representation of the ships that doesn't look too "off" with the infantry figure scale. The 1/600 do seem like a nice compromise. |

Hidden away in our workshop is a large range of 6mm ironclads which have never seen the light of day. We've been slowly sending bits down to a customer, who is putting together some painted examples: link They're not production ready yet, but only in the sense that we haven't got the metal components organised into production moulds. Drop me an email if you're interested at all, and we could send you some bits out? |

I have both in 10mm and Scale is not a problem. I used them for Shiloh and Vicksburg. 1/600 will look way off. Christopher, Jim Brokaw makes the models you are looking for. I will email an address for him once I find it. |

I ran a large Shiloh game in 6mm and also wondered about what scale ships to buy. Naturally, I bought two! I've posted a bunch of photos to show you the difference between Thoroughbred's stunning 1/600 ships, and Houston's 1/1200 line. Photo gallery can be seen here: 6mmacw.com/news.html

Here are images from Shiloh and Vicksburg games I have run over the years using my 10mm Lexington and Tyler for size comparison.
These and the images above will give you an idea. My troops are 10mm and the ones above are 6mm. |

I should say that all the figures in my posting are 10mm and the ones in the post from 6mmACW are obviously 6mm. Sorry, my statement was a bit confusing. |

That 10mm Shiloh game of yours was absolutely stunning. I've seen pictures from the game before, but it never gets old. Fantastic stuff. |
