A while back when I first got my hands on Flying Colors I was thinking about my chances of staging some of the larger fleet actions of the period with miniatures. I figured that even if I could get all the models painted up (a lot of work!) I wouldn't have enough space, and decided to try out some 1:2400 models to see how I liked them.

I don't find them visually quite as appealing as 1:1200 models, and I expected the cost savings to be greater given their size, but the scale still makes for a much more practical Trafalgar and so forth.

I like the look of Tumbling Dice models, and I like the cast on rat lines. It makes the masts very strong (the metal is very strong too, at least compared to the GHQ's I've been working on). That makes rigging easier to do. And I don't have to make my own rat lines. Didn't know how I was going to do that.

Anyway, here is Tumbling Dice's 1:2400 Santissima Trinidad. I didn't want to take too long on the hull, so I just base coated, washed and dry-brushed, and added a few touches of details. I didn't take the time to paint all the gun ports. I left off most of the standing rigging too, concentrating on running rigging to give an impression.

Pretty amazing, James. I cannot imagine working that small, especially the rigging!? Are you using the same monofilament thread that you use on your 1/1200 ships?

So, how much longer until we see the combined fleets at Trafalgar? :)

Beautiful work. Too small for me though. I'd smash it with my fingers the first time I tried to move it…….assuming I could even see it to begin with.

Talk about things that make you go blind

Nice one James, I like it a lot. The scale looks O.K. to paint. You may have made me think very hard about doing this scale. Do I hate you or not for showing me this work????

Thanks very much guys. Jim, it is indeed the same monofilament nylon as with the larger ships. I did this a while ago, so if I were doing it today I'd probably use brush bristles instead. It will probably be a while before I go much further in this scale though, as I'm still trying to get Great Lakes materials in 1:1200 together. Still, a fun sideshow.

jdpintex, it is pretty tiny, but when I get it mounted into a larger base I think moving it around will be a little more convenient. I've seem some good examples on this board of bases people have come up with for these, so I'll probably imitate those.

Rory, I have no doubt you would more than do them justice. Don't let me distract you from your awesome Russian and Swedish project though!

Very nice work. Mine, a Old Glory model, isn't a quarter as nice.

Super work!
I've been tempted by these or the 1/4800 for a while.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Ben, your models were very inspiring when working on this – I don't think I would have even tried to rig it if I hadn't seen you do it first! Your collection looks fantastic.

Very nice James. I had no clue you were doing this scale. I've said it before I think, I should send you my 2MM Napy troops to paint! Nothing seems too small for you. Those young eyes make me envious. And you aren't doing Rory's will power any good. He's been fighting the 1:2400 urge for some time now. I do what I can to help him resist, but eye candy like your beautiful Santissima…………..well it was bound to happen.

Regards,
Vol

Stop it Vol! James is a very nice man, and paints nice 1-2400 ships. nice ships which are cheap, and take up less room. Hmmmmmmm! It's looking good for smalley ships.

Haha, thanks Vol. Rory's actually not allowed to try another scale. Only I am allowed to jump mindlessly from project to project and never fully finish anything. I need other people to be more consistent so I can look at the pictures :)
