Puff the Magic Dragon breathes on Saigon – A time delay photo of a Spooky gunship at work on the outskirts of Saigon provides a vivid display for one of it's nicknames: Puff the Magic Dragon. The tracers raining down from the night sky represent only one of every five bullets fired from the gunships miniguns

The Dragon's breath! The fire from the muzzle, plus the eerie growl caused by resonance inside the empy cargo compartment, caused the superstitious Vietnamese people, both North and South, to imagine a dragon in the air earning the AC-47 nicknames such as "Puff" and "Dragonship."

Crew of American AC47 Gunship Firing 7.62 MM Miniguns on a Night Mission During the Vietnam War

AC-47 Spooky begat AC-119G/K Shadow/Stinger begat AC-130H/J/U/W Spectre/Ghostrider/Spooky/Stinger II.

I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of any of those gunships.

I remember at the Ranger Camp at Eglin AFB, FL hearing the AC-130 Spectre night firing off in the distance … One of my instructors when I was a cadet said in Vietnam they called the minigun fire "snake" … you can see why from the photos.

Wasn't one of the first public outings for the AC-47 when it appeared in the Film 'The Green Berets'?

I can remember a TV series set in Vietnam when I was young. No one episode a Vietcong sniper shot a high-ranking American officer (I think it was a General IIRC) and they pounded the area with heavy artillery and bombers for hours. One of the character commented that that sniper bullet had cost 10 cents and they were spending hundreds of thousands to get the sniper, who had probably varnished out of harms way already. This kind of reminds me of that scene!

On the C-47, the paratroop door is aft on the port side of the aircraft. This door is actually part of another, larger, cargo door.

One the AC-47, this door was usually removed prior to flight, to allow gases and errant casings to exit the aircraft.

This open door is where A1C John Levitow tossed a live flare as it ignited, saving his aircraft and fellow crewmen – for this action he was award the MoH. Levitow was one of the nicest fellows around, and he did a lot of great work after he reitred as an advocate for disabled veterans.
