John Youngerman is a genius at scratch-building, it's as simple as that.

I was never all that keen on the Dutch WW2 De Ruyter (the real ship, not this excellent model). She looks fine from the starboard bow, but there's something about her from the two quarters that makes her look almost hunchbacked.

That's because the model's hull has warped up amidships; note the gap at the waterline, and the pieces of loose material peeking out below the extremeties of the side belt. He uses a lot of paper and wood in his models. The guy is an excellent model maker, but sometimes we find out years later that stuff wasn't as stable as we expected (I sure have…).

I know what yu mean hindsTMP. But I've seen this on other waterline models of this ship.

Then again, look at the 1/1200 scale Airfix HMS Hood, which would tend to prove your point…
