Having just saw someone on TMP base their 1:6000 WWI with rounded bases on the bow I thought it would be cool to do that with my German High Seas fleet-Jutland pack (Figurehead ships). Has anyone used popsicle sticks as bases for ships? If so how did it turn out? Warping? or any issues? Although I like Aero Litko
they are always a bit pricey especially for thin bases which I will want for my 1:6000 tiny fleet. I'd like to place flags and ship names on my bases too. Any advice on base sizes? I'm thinking 1" x 2" at least since the BB Derrflinger class is about 2" in length :-) Thanks |

Not popsicle sticks but you might try something like this TMP link or link |

Far from the quality of the links Allen57 posted but I just used FoW bases (scroll down) for my Tsushima Fleets in 1/6000. TMP link |

Thanks Allen and Korsun
yeah I saw the ones from JMrino..very nice hexes but I'll go with traditional rectangles to keep my ships in line. what's scary is that some of the bases might be more expensive to make than the models themselves! |

Another idea to consider (if going cheap!) is self sticking vinyl floor tiles. Available for 39 cents at Home Depot (12" by 12" tile). Spray on some popcorn ceiling texture and then some blue paint – looks a lot like water. Cut with heavy scissors to desired sizes. |

Rather than popsicle sticks, I used basswood stock obtained at the local crafts store. It was in the same area as balsa wood. got an appropriate width and thickness in 24" lengths and cut them in uniform lengths for each type of ship (BB, CA, DD etc). IMO, basswood is much more stable than balsa and takes paint better. |

THanks but without a band saw (mine broke), I hate to cut wood manually as I'm just not good at it. My edges and lines never seem to come out straight. Anyway I just went with Litko bases even though it was pricey
spent about $25 USD for 150 bases. At least it'll be no hassle instant made bases. I wonder how much a laser cutting machine costs? :-) |
