This weekend, I went back further in time to an earlier world war with the Battle of Moys in 1757. Check out my first play through this period at Brooklyn Wargaming here: link

There is a good account of the battle in Christopher Duffy's book, "Prussia's Glory", published by Emperor's Press. Your scenario had a close enough outcome as compared to the actual battle. The Jacklesberg is a very high and steep hill and the pitch of the hill is what enabled the Austrian columns to ascend and surprise the Prussian grenadier outpost at the summit. The Prussians could not see the approaching Austrians as they scaled the heights. So this ended up being one of those rare battles in the SYW where both sides came to grips with the bayonet, rather than through musketry. Winterfeld led a Prussian counter attack that briefly regained the Jacklesberg, but he died in the attempt, having been shot in the back. (Yipes!) This of course led to speculation that he had been shot by his own troops rather than by the Austrians |
