I also wanted a more irregular shape for terrain bases. I ended up using inexpensive child's wooden puzzle pieces as shown here: link

Dyehard, What a novel use of puzzle pieces. Good work! Jim |

"Honey, I can't find all the corner pieces. Have you seen them?" Exit, stage left. |

I buy cork coasters that are backed with either plastic or mdf. The plastic coasters can be cut easily with utility scissors and than shaped and trimmed with an exacto knife. Here is an example of tree bases trimmed from one and my archaeological site where the coaster edges were merely beveled down. dyehard – GREAT idea! really young children's puzzles would have larger pieces too so more vegetation to add. AND i'm such a dope for not using a dremel to angle edges. this is why TMP is great, one question – two tips in one post! zargon – numbers on bottom is always a good idea; thanks for the reminder. |

I have a big sheet of black plastic (formerly the "desk" of lap desk), which I plan to cut apart with a jigsaw into large terrain bases for 10mm forests. This ought to produce some nicely "organic" terrain bases that can also nest together for larger terrain areas. |

I've started using vinyl floor tiles (price varies, but it can be as low as $0.39 USD/square foot piece, on sale): peel the paper, stick two pieces (glue side) together, then cut to size & shape, with a utility scissors. Apply 2-3 coats of craft/house latex paint, as needed, followed by White Glue, and sand. If it warps, gently flex it back to shape. Vinyl floor tiles are dirt cheap, easy to use, and they are easy to get (local DIY stores all carry it). They can be used for any type of base needed. Here's a link to some examples of it in use as figure bases (the red Goblin figures are Hot Glued to small squares of black floor tile pieces), as movement trays, and as a terrain base (bottom of page). Cheers! |

I buy all my laser cut mdf from mmurray on EBay. Way cheaper than buying them from Litko, etc. I have had mmurray make me ovals, pills and wierd irregular shpaes for forests and ponds. It seems that mmurray can produce pretty much whatever you want. For non-standard stuff and big orders, I just send a list of what I am after and get a quote back. Also quick service (allowing for the fact that the stuff has to come from the UK to Australia). Highly recommended. |
