Here's a few shots of a fleet of wooden ships I'm working on, inspired by pre WWI designs.
These will be used in my "Task Force" floor top games. For more information, steam over to my blog link Cheers Thomas |

Thanks all! I posted the rules in an article for the last issue of the Campaigner magazine, and will be putting them up on my Wooden Wars web site soon. nnascati- unless you are doing much smaller versions(my battleships are 18- 20 inches long) I'd recommend poplar, which is what I use. It's stronger than pine with a tighter grain, cuts and sands easily, and is reasonably priced. The turrets are wooden wheels that I order pre made. I'd love to see what you come up with! Cheers Ths |

Thomas, I would definitely be making smaller models, as I would be gaming on a table top, not the floor. I've often looked at something called "Biscuits" in Hardware stores, boat shaped pieces of composite wood. I' like to look at the rules, do you think a bright 3 year old could grasp them? I think my grand daughter would like the ships. Nick |

Nick, for smaller ships, I'd still recommend either poplar or bass wood. You can get it at the DYI stores like home depot in 1/4 inch thick and various lengths. The rules are as simple as the image above. each barrel gets to "fire" a 20 sided dice. if it hits the enemy ship, count up the pips and that's the damage. For younger players we let them roll. The real reason behind the rules were two fold: eye hand coordination and sneaky math. when they are adding up the damage, they have no idea that I've been teaching math to them. PM me and I'll send you a set of the beta rules. Cheers Ths |

I can see the 'Ironclads' battling it out now
.need to find a supply of boat shaped wood- timber is expensive here- they used it all for the Armada! |

Love it! One summer I made two scrap wood ships that we pelted with stones as they sailed out into Shinecock Bay. Somebody out for flukes prob. found them. My boys would love this game- they are math types. |

Check Bob Cordery's website at Wargaming Miscellany--he does a lot of gaming with wooden ships. Somewhat smaller, though. |

Found the wood biscuits on EBay – three sizes, ranging from 30-60+ mm in length, so torpedo boats, cruisers and battleships are on the cards! |
