Oh, I didn't know there was a collection.
I'm not one for reading much fantasy… Tolkien and Lieber and some of the New Weird… that's about it. But I did really enjoy the Black Company books. They're dark and funny and exciting… but seldom cute or predictable.
I wish the guys I play RPGs with would read more Glen Cook and a bit less Terry Pratchett (who is very quotable but not my taste for games).

The Black Company is a pretty cool series. It always seemed to me like it was fantasy written by a wargamer.

I've heard that 'Malazan Book of the Fallen' is a decent fantasy series in the same vein (one of the books bears a dedication to The Black Company), and it began as a gaming setting for a GURPS campaign.
Not that I've read any of them… though I might.

Both are very fine.

Don't need those since I have all of the Black Company books.

Though my Black Company book is a tad bit old and on the worn side.

But it is almost 30 years old.

I had to wait 8 years before I could read the 3rd book in the series because it took me that long to find a copy of the 2nd Book.

But it is a series that I have read like 3-4 times and will reread again.

The Black Company is one of the best (and first) "dark" fantasy series ever written.

I've read a lot of fantasy in my years, and liked almost all of it. The Black Company is the first fantasy series I loved. And I still love it even more than anything else I've ever read.

I read the entire series at least once a year.
