Just curious if anyone is gaming roughly 1700s-1800s era troops vs. Orcs/fantasy races? It is just one of those thoughts that pops into my head from time to time. I am not asking about Flintloque type games but, rather, conventional humans vs. fantasy troops.

You want the Black Powder fantasy Board for that:

Ral Partha had some Wild Orcs that were sorta like North American Indians that I sometimes use in skirmish games

My interpretation may be off but I consider Black Powder Fantasy to mean fantasy troops who use black powder (like Flintloque and Warhammer), which is not what I am asking about. I guess that could be a discussion in itself.

I did 19th C Canadians vs Orcs in a Sword and the Flame game.
I had way too many figures, and the Canadians lost.

Do the orcs have to use guns? Or can it be musketeers versus scimitars-wielding orcs?

^^^ Yes, that is what I am saying; normal humans vs. traditional orcs.

John the OFM29 Nov 2013 5:03 p.m. PST

I had a bunch of RAFM's Soldiers of the Queen, Foundry Zulu War British and Riel's Rebellion Riflemen, Ral Partha redcoats, etc and far too many "traditional" Orcs.

TSATF does not have "army morale", so the Orcs and Goblins just swarmed the Canadians. I treated the Orcs and Goblins as "ordinary" Pathans or Dervish with melee weapons only.
Figures armed with bows could of course use them as bows.
And I treated javelin armed Greenskins just as in TSATF.

It all started when Chris Palmer gave me a Stargate, and things just got out of hand from there. grin Just your usual 1000 figure game.

I havent but I was eyballing my friends' Seven Years War collection and wondering how I could use them in a game with my undead army.

Would Melnibonéans in 18th century dress do?
These have fought against humans of the same period.

cheers,

I've long been tempted to do something with Napoleonic troops versus witch armies from the Black Forest… similar to the battle at the end of The Brothers Grimm.

Probably not a huge project if I keep it down to a small skirmish, use the various Song of Blades rules.

I am. Or rather I will be. I'm starting with Trolls though.

I started this project with an article in "Saxe N'Violets" the newsletter of the Society of Daisy. Unlike most other gamers I have imposed certain restrictions on the game.

This is that "Even the Orcs must be beautiful."

To me the 18th century is an age that epitomized beauty, and sought beauty in all things. Look at the fabulous decoration of the palaces and the churches, the hypnotic allure of the art, and the music. Look at the military and civilian fashion and how the aim wasn't functionality or efficiency, but allure and aesthetic appeal.

So to bring the fantasy races into the age of the Roccoco one has to clean them up a lot.

Therefore the Trolls for example are a lot more like the Trolls in Pier Gynt than in Tolkein. In the conception of the Trolls in my Imagi-Nation they look fairly like us only being slightly larger, with a slightly greenish cast to the skin-- noticeable but not hideous. I worked in a story about the Troll-Girl Etterline who by a series of chances comes into the Court of the Inquisitor of Germany, the Archbishop of Cologne, who discoveres she has a stunning voice and is training her for the Opera.

I'm making a Troll unit from some very large 33mm figures but it will be a simple Grenadier unit in statistics.

The Orcs I will be bringing in as a semi-barbarian Balkan tribe in my Army of Ikea, The unit will be of Bashi-Bazooks Once again significant clean-up is being done to move them from the Tolkeinesque to the Bougainville version, and yes, Even the Orcs will be beautiful. I'll try and use the big fat Front-Rank figures for this.

As for Elves-- Sorry they're all gone, mostly intermarried with humans and now indistinguishable. I'll leave the dwarves and hobbitts out of it all.

If I put in giants I'm going to make them all quakers.

I guess that 'Orcs' discovered in the 18th C. would live in a newly discovered 7th Continent- large 'Mysterious Island' / 'Lost World' à la Challenger – Tarzan or 'at the Earth's core' Pellucidar fashion?

My problem with Orcish miniatures is that (reflecting Tolkien's naive 'manichaeism' combined with 'political correctness'?) they look far too much 'cartoonish' to be simply credible. I prefer to see them as some kind of Neanderthals (as in 'The 13th Warrior') at most -like Picts in the world of Conan the Barbarian. Thus for me I'd play 18th C. explorers / pirates vs cavemen (or cave girls in fur bikini cavegirlwargaming.blogspot.fr, but it's 200% personal).

Now for 'credible' Orcs in 18th C. dress some SYW Foundry such as the French Gardes Françaises would be perfect evil grin

Btw regarding 'trolls' the word had a traditional meaning far wider than modern tourists in Norway can believe. Old songs such as 'Herr Mannelig' YouTube link and 'Konungen och Trollkvinnan' YouTube link suggest that just like Fée in old French 'troll' meant generally 'of magical nature' / 'magic user' such as werecreature, witch ('Trøllabundin YouTube link means 'bewitched') or even simply 'pagan'. Thus not only attractive sorceresses but beautiful creatures such as the Huldra (with a cow tail) YouTube link and the Räven (Fox Woman) YouTube link can be categorized as 'trolls'…

I use 18th and 18th Century orcs and goblins to fight traditional fantasy orcs and goblins…and leprechauns.

Not quite what you were looking for but there is nothing particularly orcish about the musket armed troops other than their looks.

If at least one force is orcs/dwarves/whatever using muskets etc. then I reckon that is Black Powder Fantasy. What else would you call it?

Scalplock has a scenario where the Fellowship of the Ring minus Gandalf fights off Butler's Rangers and Indian allies.

I do use my 7YW French as an "Empire" army in Warhammer, I have a steamtank and some big organ guns served by my French artillerymen

Not fought Orcs, my son has High Elves – you need Gendarmes and Cuirassiers to cope with their lancers :-)
