There seems to be a view that the woodwork of English guns was painted red (at least sometimes), but is there any evidence as to the colour of Scottish guns? I'm sure I have seen "black" mentioned, but was this really black or just "dark" (dubh)? And are we talking iron or bronze guns in the main? Would frame gun barrels and carriages have been any different, do we think? |

The carriages are thought to have been tarred rather than painted. Wood tar on wood gives a dark brown. A previous TMP thread covered it I'll see if I can find it x42 |

That would have been me. TMP link The "framme guns" would have been bronze. I don't know if the Scots were any different, but field guns tended to be bronze. Iron guns were built heavier for safety. |

Wood-tar comes in many different colors – but the key is it produces a stain – it is not a paint. Fresh wood is also pretty light in color – imagine yellowy/white. Good way to get the effect is to use and ochre/sandy yellow with highlights and then slap on some army painter shade (middle tone works fine) – this stains it up well Comments on guns are pretty good – but again we can never be sure – sweddish leather guns were wrapped in leather for a reason
So you pays your money and makes your choice – either way they will look good as you'll have painted them and thats what matters. Good luck Roy |
