So, I have been reading the novel "A Small Colonial War", by Robert Frezza Jr. I was then thinking that it could make a good wargame, with Boers, Cowboys, and Imperial forces, maybe even through some Corporate forces into the mix? What do you think, about the book, and about the possible game? |

The book is excellent. Thought about wargaming, but haven't done so yet. Fire in a Faraway Place is very good also (the second book) Cain's Land, the third book is not quite as good as the other two (in my opinion) but still a pretty good read. |

I liked those, I wonder where my copies are? |

I like the entire trilogy. The writing style is rather unique but quickly draws you in. I think it's the 2nd novel, but wherever they return to the homeworld, there is a definite "Ghost in the Shell" narrative going on, which is quite strange and amazing considering I don't even think GitS was even conceived at that point. Did anyone else catch notice it? |

Never gamed them directly, but they've been inspiration for some modern projects – paras with a bit of light armour is just right for 28mm. I wonder if you could adapt AK47 (either version)? It might give the right 'improvised' feel. |

Some of the best military SF ever written. Have reread the trilogy several times. Well thought out premises on colonial warfare in a future where star flight has limits on speed and capacity. Definitely agree that it has strong possibilities for gaming. Have also not yet done so. I have to disagree CorroPredo, I think 'Cains Land' has some of the best sequences in the trilogy. The chapter where the corvette 'intercepts' the missile strike gets me every time. Hadn't run into "Ghost in the Shell," Andrew. The book does predate the movie, but authors often draw on themes/technology that is being discussed even if not widely known. Might have to look at "Ghost in the Shell" to see the similarities. |

I really think the idea of having small units is interesting, and probably more plausible than massive armies. Now, at the spot I am in the 1st book, it hasent really given many descriptions of Imperial Uniforms. Do you have any information on that? |

goragrad, The first movie gives you a good idea, but it's the two series that really ratchet up the similarities. I'm not an Anime fan, per se, but I (thankfully) got drawn into Last Exile on the "Old G4" network and purchased that series and then I caught GitS on Saturuday Anime Eve and got into the entire culture. Both are well written, intelligent drama's that could easily transistion to live action TV, IF done right (no cheesy CGI). Again though, I really enjoyed the entire Small Colonial War trilogy. |

Thanks for posting this. I got myself a second hand copy off the back of it. As for wargaming it, based on the blurb, yes I think it could be done well. GBS 15mm.co.uk |

Andrew - Also not an anime fan, but when I get a chance will look into it. THEAXECHIPMUNK -
As to uniforms, don't have my copies of the books handy. As I recall, Frezza uses the term 'blouse' when referring to the troops uniform, so I pictured them along the lines of 20th century Russian uniforms. And it may just be a failure of imagination, but I think of the Imps as wearing uniforms similar to those of WWII. With the current trend of revisionist history that you can see in some Japanese politicians and the book's premise that Japan is the dominant world power it seems logical of that their military would resurrect or imitate 'traditional' styles. Rather like samurai who wore recreations of anachronistic armor in the Age of Battles. |

@Goragrad I also was imagining some sort of uniforms reminiscent of WW2, of course with near-futur-y weapons. |
