All told four lizardman sculpts were produced for the AD&D range ~1980 and from these I made the conversions you see in the group above. A sword-armed lizardman was sold in the (2010) Denizens of the Swamp set, an the Axe-armed lizardman was sold in the (104) Lizardmen blister, and a club-armed lizardman was sold in either of the above. The champion is from the (8002) Action Art : Monsters box set. I painted these in 2011 and there are at least two stragglers, still unpainted, that will hopefully round out the group to at least ten t some point in the future. link

The spear-armed lizardman is converted from the club variant. The center figure is the axe-armed variant but the axe has been swapped for a club. flickr.com/photos/64202339@N00/10865281536

"link The left most figure is stock save the axe came pressed up against the body to meet the demands of one-piece casting, and had to be cut away to straighten it, and the gap detail sculpted back in. The center figure had it's sword replaced with a sturdier falchion. The right figure is stock. link

The champion originally had a lance, which was swapped for a sword. The tongue and several front teeth have been resculpted as they were bit oversized in the original casting. You've got to love the Kermit the Frog style leaf fringe around the neck. link
Showing the prodigious size of these creatures, fully the 7' specified in the Monster Manual Lots more commentary, painting rundown, etc on a blog post here: link
This post is really timely, too After putting these on my blog I found out by sheer coincidence Mirliton has just brought these figures back into production, news here: link |

Oooh blast from the past! I've got that champion, or at least his cousin – same figure, same pose, but with a weird lance-like weapon. Also, love the Heritage Models Knight. I've got him from Dungeon Dwellers: Caverns of Doom, which is a really fun little game. |

Terrific! I absolutely love the old Grenadier lizardmen. some of my favorite minatures ever. The champion conversion looks great. Great job overall, and I'm very happy to see them back in production. I sure didn't see THAT coming. |

Based on the old Trampier art, and looking just as fantastic. |

Excellent work! I own the Denizens of the Swamp set, but my sword-wielding lizardman's weapon broke long ago. The club-wielding lizardman is fine, though. Your great paint jobs have inspired me to maybe paint up some of my old classic miniatures! Maybe I'll repair that sword, for starters

Fantastic work on some great figures, spooktalker. They're certainly channeling that classic ad&d Trampier vibe! |

Thanks all, glad you like these! @darthfozzywig: Same figure, mine is converted. I can sometimes appreciate some whimsical or just plain weird element on an old figure but that funky lance thing (and oversized tongue and teeth) was making an otherwise mean looking guy hard to take seriously so they had to go. @The Beast Rabban: thanks! I didn't see it coming either. Some of those other lizardmen were really hard to track down over the years, too. @The Angry Piper: Yeah, give it a go! The sword was badly done anyway and the figure is no worse for the loss. I replaced it with a plastic gw weapon, which are oversized in 25mm so just right for a 7" lizardman. The plastic and the lead take a pin easily so it's a fast job and sturdy when done. Based on the old Trampier art, and looking just as fantastic. Exactly. I had forgotten about that! Yup, that's one reason these guys got paint before my other sets of lizardmen! These guys are official AD&D, after all! @Kazinga: Um, I pointed that news out in the original post! ;) |

Where was the Grenadier lizard man with the spiky star and the crowbar originally from? It's now produced by Mirliton SG and is called "Lizardman Hero". It seems familiar to me from back in the eighties, but I can't think from where. I'm wondering if I'm just wrong. |

Wonderful work. This reminds me I have some of the Lizardman Tyrants sitting in a blister…might need to break some out! |

I found the answer to my question (posting it here in case anyone else ever wondered) – it's one of the two Rakshasa from the Grenadier AD&D blister-packs. The other Rakshasa is an elephant-man. It makes sense that I felt like I'd seen it before as my brother had that set back in the 80's. |
