Platform 9¾ and You Missed It. "Improv Everywhere hosts a video series on YouTube called Movies in Real Life, in which New York City improv groups bring classic films like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and The Matrix to life amidst the daily goings-on of the Big Apple. They've put Gandalf in Central Park, the DeLorean and Doc Brown in the Flatiron, and Storm Troopers in the subway. They've been doing them since at least 2010, but this fall they'll be releasing a new installment every week. Earlier this month they recreated Jurassic Park in Manhattan and Prospect Park, and before that they recreated the orgasm scene from When Harry Met Sally at Katz's Delicatessen in the Lower East Side. Now, they've put a tiny Harry Potter doppelgänger in Penn Station, and instructed him to ask around for Platform 9¾. The result: nothing short of magical

That's terrific. Quite a great bit of improv by the young actor; he handles reactions and questions without missing a beat. |

Now, they've put a tiny Harry Potter doppelgänger in Penn Station, and instructed him to ask around for Platform 9¾. That's just daft. EVERYONE knows that it's Platform 9¾ at Kings Cross! |

Having time to kill between trains at King's Cross last weekend, I sat down to a pie and a pint at the Parcel House pub. Turns out it's just upstairs from "Platform 9 3/4" where the Potter fans pose for photos. The non-stop chorus of "GRIFFINDOOOOR!" made me think terrible thoughts concerning a combine harvester and the whole damn lot of them. |

It used to be just the prop stuck in the wall and up to people whether they wanted to go and take a photo or whatever. Now it's tied to the Harry Potter shop and is a cash cow for them – personally I think that stinks, it's turned a quirky out of the way bit of fun into a commercial venture. That makes me a little sad (but makes someone – JK Rowling ? – a lot richer). It's not even very close to Platforms 9 & 10 now. |
