Last weekend was the wargame convention Fall In, where I ran 2 games of LOTR:SBG. Here's the first battle report of that game.

The Setup based on the story from Unfinished Tales from Christopher Tolkien. The King's son, Théodred was not fooled by Saruman's treachery and was guarding the Fords of Isen against attack from Isengard. Théodred learned of the pending attack and struck first. Leading the Rohirrim across the Fords, he attacked Saruman's forces. Initially successfully, he was eventrually thrown back after striking the main body of Uruk-hai. His companion Grimbold fights a rear guard action while Théodred makes an escape. He retreated to the Fords, only to find Uruk-hai on the other side of the River Isen trapping him. between 2 forces. He seizes a small Island in the middle of the Fords to make a defensive stand. This is where we start the action.

Religon, I went with your suggestion and dropped Def values by 1 across the board. I think that worked very well.

I'm glad the tweak helped.

Xin- did you find that Religon's tweak made for more casualties and faster combat?

Ranger, yes. Combats resolved faster. When you have Uruk, Royal Guard and Heroes on the table, you have a lot of high defense models. Which means lots of misses on the "to wound" roll. Combats drag out longer.

Now at home I like that, but in a big game at a con, you want things to be faster paced. I bought everyone with a shield that could, then dropped the Def by one, on everything except the Troll and Ents. I felt that it weakended them too much.

As it was, they died pretty quick. Only one Ent survived the other battle. Of course they draw a lot of fire like a tank on a battlefield.

Another thing, straight up, Uruk > Rohan in almost every fight I've seen. In each battle, Rohan had some defensive advantage, small but there and still barely won. In an open battle, Wesley Snipes says "Always bet on black", not green.
