I've got my Iraqi tanks painted up in a sand sort of color but now I want to start on the Iranians. Anyone ever painted armored vehicles for this conflict? What did you use for the Iranians.

I suppose I could use some more sand but I'd like to be to differentiate them more easily from the Iraqis, I'm using 3mm Pico armor.

I googled for pics but most were black and white and even the few color ones were varied or just plain dusty/dirt covered to tell.

Yeah, I could paint everything dusty, dirty but again I would like some difference between the two sides.

Tons of Iran-Iraq War pics here, but you'll have to sort through them for vehicle pics that may help:

Thank you Steve that is a treasure trove of pictures I have never seen before. The Iranian forces should be very colorful to paint if anyone ever gets around to making a miniature line for them.

Thanks Steve, that helps me. There's actually quite a mix of paint jobs on their tanks alone over and above other vehicles.

This looks like an interesting period to wargame. I would have to read more about it. Might be a nice change from the IDF kicking the crap out of the Arabs.

Very cool but who is who in those photos? I can figure out that the troops armed with the G-3 would be Iranians but a lot of those pictures everyone looks the same. And there were a string of photos with troops moving about in Blue jackets who and what were they?

ACW Gamer12 Nov 2013 10:36 a.m. PST

Irish, It also looks like the blue jackets have hoods. One soldier was wearing a gas mask and had the hood up.

mghFond12 Nov 2013 12:38 p.m. PST

From what I've read, the guys in the blue were Iranians. More likely Baseej or Pasdaran not Army regulars.

Dragon Gunner12 Nov 2013 5:49 p.m. PST

Blue jackets and the red head bands are Basij.

"but a lot of those pictures everyone looks the same"- Irish Marine

In a lot of the photos you see Iranians wearing green head bands on their helmets. They also seem to use some distinct camo patterns along with plain OD. Even if they are armed with AK's I would paint some distinct camo pattern and give them all a green head band to tell them apart from the Iraqis.

Does anyone know what the green hand band says or is about?

Green is the color adopted as a symbol by the 'revolutionaries' that overthrew the shah?

tuscaloosa13 Nov 2013 5:24 p.m. PST

Green is the color of Islam.
