Ok, so I have been doing this for a few years – detailed replay of Heraclea on a 2'x2' board looking for fast play. But I have only done two in the last year and I do love playing with rules I do not know. So, for November I thought I would catch up and attempt to do 5 detailed replays of Heraclea with rules I had never played before. Baron Wars is up first. There are no reviews for this game on the internet, so I have also provide a (long) overview of the rules as well. They were fun, but not as historical as I perceive.

Read the overview and battle report on the blog (note: report is long as I want to show how the rules work in detail for anyone else interested):

If I want to do 5 reports in November, I need to complete one every 6 days. I finished this on the 8th and had only just started the second game. I need to catch up. I have cheated slightly and in the last week of November I wrote the three overviews for the rules that had no info on them, and also wrote the troops types up. So all I have to do it deploy and play and writeup the result. Sounds easy when I type it.

Here is a teaser pic where the Agema and elephant are in melee with the Roman Cavalry (yes, that is really an Indian elephant – I grabbed the wrong one when I deployed and did not notice until the end!):

Interesting AAR and review of a good st of rules. I have to ask though why would you choose rules written for a very specific time period and game scale, to do something entirely different, and then be surprised that the rules didn't play as you expected?

I was interested in the mechanics of the rules. I did not expect them to play perfectly for Ancients with WRG bases. It was that the *mechanics* did not play out as I expected – units lasted longer than I thought they would and morale rolls did not occur very often. You can read rules but until you play them things like that are not going to reveal themselves.
