For 10/15mm figures I finish bases with sand/grit and static grass, but I feel that would be overscale for 3mm, so I'm seeking suggestions. The project I have in mind will have quite a large exposed area on each base, so finish will be important. |

Just paint. Anything else would be way overscale and swamp the models. |

If you can find a very fine grout or spackle, that might work. Thin it a little more than would be normal, and apply around the base. You can smooth it easier into tight places, but it will still have a little texture for painting/dry-brushing. The trick is just finding a product that's fine enough to work. |

It looks like I will need filler (Polyfilla or Tetrion) to hide the figure bases, but it doesn't have much texture especially when watered down. I fear that paint alone over that will look very flat. |

If you want that route, there is acrylic texture medium available that would give a little heft to your base color.Just mix in enough to the desired consistancy. |

You could consider sandpaper – cut out a piece to glue to your base, then just stipple it a bit here and there with green paint to get the effect of brush and grasses. You could even smear a couple drops of white glue here and there and dust it with fine-scale green flock in order to get the impression of some scattered foliage. |

Texture paint from Tamiya can give nice result. |

I use fine sand – about what would go through a coarsish pair of tights. Enough texture to catch a drybrush but only just. For bushes I use very fine foam scatter – any static grass is too big. Leaving the bases without something to 'kill' the egdes of the blocks really doesn't look that good. |

Woodland scenic blended turf flock. It is very fine, but you need to glue the vehicles on afterwards. Plain paint just looks awful. |

Thanks for all the responses. I think the best way forward will probably be: (1) Filler to build up the surface level with the figure bases. (2) Very find sand, maybe overall or possibly just in parts. (3) Very fine flock. The author admits he hasn't hidden the base edges properly, but I rather like the overall effect here: link If the flock is fine enough it seems quite OK with these tiny figures. |

I agree with Martin Rapier. WS fine flock works perfectly. |

I just use Woodland scenics flocking and it works fine – here are some of my minis TMP link |
