I was just reading about this fight two nights ago and saw the same map in the book I was reading. All very interesting. What I never knew was the USS Kearsarge was almost an ironclad in her own right due to the heavy chain she used to drape over her hull's midsection. Many of Alabama's shells struck this protective armor and bounced off. The book I read stated the armor was hidden from view, covered with light wood that was painted to match her hull -- all done to make the Kearsarge appear equal to the Alabama, making her skipper and crew feel as if she stood a chance in a fight. |

Here's a very interesting book on this topic, especially if you're also into art. Some great illustrations, and copies are less than $5 USD with shipping. At that price I'd highly recommend it. link |

She was not "almost an ironclad". The Confederates have been trying to explain why the Alabama lost since the battle. The Kearsarge hung chain on her sides over vulnerable areas, which had been done by many other wooden ships for years when given a chance to prepare for battle. Even the Alabama's two (2) 32 pound hits broke or punched through the chains. The Alabama had poor gun crews, lousy gun powder and was outclassed by a highly trained crew and officers. The Alabama fired well over 300 rounds and had only a few hits. The Kearsarge on the other hand fired far fewer shots, had more of them hit and tore the Alabama apart. Since the Alabama had more and what should have been better guns (6x 32 pdr, 110 and 68 pdr vs 4x 32 pdr, 2 x 11" SB and a 30 pdr), the real question is not why did she come out to fight, but why did she fight so poorly.
