Last month when I was in London I bought a toy catapult / pencil sharpener at the British Museum's gift shop:

I tried it with a small wad of rolled up tissue, about the size of a pea (wife won't allow heavier projectiles!) and it will throw it about 6-8 feet. Ancients gaming with HG Wells Little Wars!

Pity it dosen't catapult sharpend pencils.
