I would welcome any pointers for suitable Vallejo colours for ATCs and Monitors in 10mm. I have a selection of the 10mm models from Kennington.

I am conscious of the school of thought that, in the smaller scales, perhaps a lighter shade should be used.

Also, I have a model of what appears to be a South Vietnamese River Patrol Craft. I seem to recall reading somewhere that these were painted grey, rather than the green of US vessels: is this correct, and, if it is, what shade of grey would be appropriate?

Thanks,

Alan

Alan, I use US Navy Haze Gray for my SVN craft. That was the color the US Navy itself was using in the 60s and much of South Vietnam's paint stocks were US supplied. I'm sorry, but I don't use Vallejo for my Vietnam minis.

There's a real Viet Nam war riverlcraft on display at a museum In Hackensack, NJ. I beleive its grey.

The majority of US riverine craft were painted dark green.
Swift boats and some mine clearance craft could be found in both gray and green I use a can of US dark green for a sprayed on base coat then weather using progressivly lighter greens. The SVN used moastly haze gray but as the war progressed most small craft were left in Dark green.

For riverine green, I use Humbrol 116 Dark Green. It's an excellent match and is also what Pibber uses. That's enough of a recommendation for me! In 1970-71, the US gave South Vietnam our entire riverine fleet, so it continued to serve in dark green and never was repainted gray.

from what I remember of the discussions, the general rule was that if it was a US boat going up the river but NOT the ocean, it was green. If it had blue-water capabilities, it was gray.

Yes Lion. The only boats routinely seen in gray were Swift boats and the various landing and support craft. Swifts and landing craft were also frequently in green
