I'm wondering whether magnetic paint might provide an easy solution to my sabot problem. I want to sabot two 15x15mm bases on one 30x15mm sabot. The bases only hold three 10mm figures, and are 0.8mm thin wood, so they are very light. I was considering using magnetic sheeting and metal paper, but I wonder whether using magnetic paint might be easier than cutting up the metal paper. On the other hand, I'm assuming I don't want the rough texture paint on the bottom of my bases, so I'll have to cut some sort of sabot anyway to apply the paint to. Too much bother?

Cheers,

Christopher

My understanding is that magnetic paint doesn't have much in the way of magnetic attraction unless you use it over a large area!

I've always gone with steel paper and self adhesive magnetic tape. Steel paper cuts very easily with a pair of scissors.

I'd agree with what Jim said.

Thanks guys. That's a very useful link Jim – I hadn't known about the rolls of magnetic tape, which at 15mm width would make it a snap to cut for my bases. The packs of steel paper are also nicely priced.

I tried using metal paint and magnetic bases, for lining storage boxes, and it did not work.

With magnetic (steel) paint the strength of the attraction is proportional to the volume of paint applied. Even the so-called "double strength" variety requires two coats. But multiple coats = thick and heavy.
The other thing is that you need to do is shake the can for ages as the ferrous material settles to the bottom of the can.
For custom sizes, magnetking.com will do them for no extra cost if sufficient quantities are ordered.
I prefer the thinnest sheet as thick bases look bad.
There is a table showing magnetic strength (pull weight) of different thicknesses on the magnetking site.
