Really nice work. I love those guys, though I am still undecided as to how to rate them using Warmaster rules.

Really nice work. I love those guys, though I am still undecided as to how to rate them using Warmaster rules.

My take:

Rangers of Ithilien (Men of Gondor): Infantry Attack: 2/1 Hits: 3 Armor 0.
Special abilities: Can shoot 360°. Gain one die per unit (not per stand) when shooting, attacking, or defending while in natural cover (woods or dense terrain, but not fortifications). This die is in addition to any other terrain bonus. Do not suffer the "dense terrain" command penalty. Can pursue fleeing cavalry for one combat round only per melee.
Cost: 80

Fits their nature as effective ambush troops trained in woodland fighting who regularly defeat orcs and Southrons in the forest, yet don't do so well defending Osgiliath… (And the "pursue cavalry" capability is borrowed from the Dwarf Rangers of standard Warmaster).

Oh, and as a hero, I suggest Faramir: +2 attack, +3 with Rangers of Ithilien. Command 8 (Command 9 with troops from Gondor). Cost: 90

You will note that the Rangers are thus very dangerous in cover, but kinda suck in the open (having no armor and only melee attack 2), and are nothing special in fortifications. The cavalry pursuit thing is a great advantage, but it will pull them into exposure, which is dangerous, and not what the company is designed for… again, this fits the novels (and the films).

The stats are intended for use with the Battle of Five Armies rules, which tend to have lower numbers than GW's Warmaster "Old World" armies. If you're going with "Old World" stats, goose the Attack to 3/1 and the points cost to 90.

I want to use WM Ancients as main rules (with some modifications, of course). This mean IŽll try to reduce to minimum the number of special rules used in the army lists.

So, rangers will probably be:
Infantry Attack: 2/1 Hits: 3 Armor 0. Skirmishers.

That works (and in fact, I had thought of skirmisher rules as a possibility, but assumed you were working with either the original WM or Bo5A rules, which don't include skirmishers). But at the same time, the Rangers of Ithilien aren't technically skirmishers. Skirmishers exist to harry the enemy in hopes of provoking a rash charge, or "loosening" the enemy up for heavier troops to crack. In the novel and the films, the Rangers take more significant action, wiping out a sizable contingent of an enemy column en route towards the Black Gate. Hence my attempt to "juice 'em up a bit" into a more potentially dangerous force.

I like that Parzival. I'm doing Bo5A rules where possible. Thanks.
