I've always felt Seven Pines was one of those great "missed opportunities" of the war, and so it makes for a pretty fun scenario. We recently fought the two-day battle between Heintzelman and Johnston. Lots of pictures and the full AAR are posted here:

Very nice. Going to go into 6mm myself around Christmas. Baccus figures? Saw one base with three ranks on it. Who was it, why three ranks? Really like how the battlefield can be set up in 6mm. How did you do the trees?

Baccus figures, absolutely! I did a handful of bases with three ranks deep and a mounted officer for no particular reason. I just thought it looked cool. There's a tree tutorial on the website under "Terrain Tips" for the canopy sections. The individual trees are pins with clump foliage. Under the felt we use those interlocking foam tiles for play rooms or exercise rooms. Makes it nice to stab pins through the felt for trees or to anchor other terrain.

Very cool idea for the trees!

Yeah, I was going through this earlier today. I saw it at the website before here. I have a big hankering for the rules. grin I love the look of those battles. Very well done.

My 10mm are based on 2"x2" stands. About 18-21 figs per stand. Two lines with skirmishers out front. I think I'll need to reflock my bases. They were done in the 90's and need updated.

I can't wait to get the rules and the eastern scenario book. I haven't done much with my figs since the 90's. That's a crying shame. There are at least 1400 painted. I have a few 100 more in the works.

I'm so excited…..and I just can't hide it…….wink

Thanks,

John, a very eager gent.

I got hold of the rules for "Altar of Freedom" and the Eastern Battle Scenarios a while back. We just finished playing the Battle of Seven Pines scenario (only day one) tonight as well as last week with my 6mm Baccus figures. I had different players for both games, and the game has been a big hit with everyone and alot of fun. I also ordered some tents, wagons, etc. to build HQ stands.

6mmACW,

Went through your website. What GREAT ideas. Such a good resource

Agreed! Received my copy of Altar of Freedom last week. Been going through the rules this week. Great first impression so far.

Tell me about "those interlocking foam tiles for play rooms or exercise rooms." Never heard of them.

Those foam tiles are all over the place. You can find them at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. They're great for war gaming, because you can do modular boards, carve rivers or indented features, and stick them with pins. They're also easy to transport. They look like this:

6mm, that's a great layout. Also a fan of the foam tile idea…but how do you carve out rivers, etc..? A hot-knife or similar, or a blade? I've done it with foam board (that dense styrofoam material) but I'm curious what you use for these types of tiles.

Thanks for any advice.

Cheers,
Bob

I'm sure a hot knife would work nicely. I actually use a Dremel with a heavy-grit sand bit to carve the rivers. It's very fast and you can buy a battery-powered Dremel cheaply.

Ah great tip, thank you! Looking forward to trying this out. :-)

Excellent tip, thanks!

I'm confused. The battle boards shown of the site are custom made and don't use the commercial ones mentioned. They are covered by a groundcloth. Are they thick enough to do custom work on? Can you then glue paper towels to them too?

Thanks,

John
