Very much fun. Reminds me of our early days about five years earlier and about 10 years older than these fellows. My recent nostalgia treat was a slew of Otherworld minis bought in honor of those first D&D (Minifigs)figures we bought from a little model shop on Main Street in Amherst, NY in the late 70's.
BTW, my only two surviving Minifig figures from the '70's:

The village hobby shop! Got my white box copy of D&D there! Now. Its an attorneys office. Small shop but always had something cool. |

Yes! That was it. I got my first printing DM and Monster Manuals, and Fiend Folio there. The Minis used to be on a rotating carousel or two towards the back. They also had an amazing array of vacuform kits. Perhaps you patronized the place on Hertle, or maybe it was on Kenmore – we knew it as Lumpy's? It was on the second floor of an old storefront. |

What a great article! My fantasy gaming development pretty much parallels yours. Great memories. Glad to hear you getting back into it again with the youngsters. I've had to settle for solo gaming for lack of anyone that plays. Like you, I go back and look at my old books and things from years past and remember the times and friends fondly. |

I didn't get started until the early 80s. Back then Grenadier was doing some D&D figs. Still have a few of those figs from the early boxed sets around. Fond memories! |

Yup. 5th grade here too. My folks bought the Blue Box for my brother and I as a Christmas gift. We never looked back.

Cool, thanks for sharing! I still play old-school D&D. And I still have my old miniatures from Grenadier, Ral Partha, and RAFM. |

Wow, brought back memories! Thanks! My two favorite characters were my wizard The Warlock Ironslayer and Marco Steelbow, my Halfling Ninja-thief. |

I have to say that 'D&D' and 'gaming' has probably been the starting point for many long and worthy friendships (certainly applies here). The social-stigma attached to this stuff means that the friendships are real. More interesting, however, were the very spot-on observations about vocabulary, math, history, tactics, etc
These games put an intellectual demand on the players beyond that of their peers (nerd appeal?), and way beyond today's 'gamers' who are immersed in computer/video gaming: There is no doubt in my mind that RPGs and minis-games are not only socially superior to video-gaming, but also require a great deal more intellect, imagination, and artistic endeavor. There are still imaginative young-folk like us oldsters about, but most of them get sucked into the immediate gratification and audiovideo-narcosis of video-gaming very early. Oh well. |
