I start with a question: Does anyone know the source of the lists of Spanish regiments at the end of the Peninsular War, shown at the end of the original Osprey book on the Spanish army, and repeated in one of the 3-volume books by Osprey more recently?
"Back in the Day" I made the decision to focus in 30mm, only on the Peninsular War. Charles Stadden made well-propotioned and heroic figures of British Waterloo infantry, mostly defending, plus a marvelous selection of the Royal Scots Grey at the charge (with two Gordon highlanders running with them!). These were the main reason to focus on the Peninsula.
His French were limited to excellent figures of the Old Guard grenadiers advancing in dress uniforms; and voltigeurs/grenadiers of the line in overalls, Waterloo era. We had to convert these chaps to make line infantry.
I also gained a bunch (50 each?) of Willy 30mm private men of Austrian grenadiers and fusiliers; Prussian musketeers; Russian line grenadiers; and Bavarians at easy, back pack on rear of left hip. I converted many of these to Spanish mid-war using the Osprey list. I now consider them a sort of "Imaginations Spanish-like Peninsular War troops."
But I wonder if these may actually have been adopted mid-war, and worn through to the end?
Rey: brown short-tailed coat; purple collar, lapels, cuffs, flaps and turnbacks, all edged white. Brown or white overalls. Shakos similar to the French. I recall an illustation of a grenadier in this uniform but with French-style bearskin.
Zamora: same cut, coat of dark blue. Collar and cuffs red edged white. Lapels buff. overalls of white or brown. French type shako.
Voluntarios de Navarra: dark blue coat, collar and cuffs either light green or light blue, edged white; lapels the opposite color.
Barcelona: dark blue coat, collar and cuffs red edged white. Lapels lightish green edged white.
I did some of them with pointed-top brown wool cap; brimmed straw hat; british-type shako; shapeless night cap with top hanging down the side; hair net looking arrangement hangind down from rear of shako; top hat with turned-up brim on one or both sides, etc. All mixed in same units.
Cut away parts of back packs and canteens, etc, so the Russian figures appeared to have a shapeless bag hanging over a non-military colored blanket. Added round bar solder filed into shape of tiny barrel as water flask for some.
Generally 12 to 15 of each unit. I would like to expand them with a bunch of unpainted figures, and add officers, drummers sergeants, flag bearers, grenadiers, light company men, from other makers.
But it would be nice to find if anyone knows if these uniforms might have been valid in mid-war.
