The other day we gave LOTR:SBG a try for Dark Age battles. It went well. Read the Battle Report on my blog, with lots of pics.

Love it! SBG is so good for shield wall warfare. Someone should really do a dark age version of this game (just like BKC is a warmaster port).
Once the last hobit film is out GW will probably drop the rules and they deserve a wider audience.

Very cool! Who made the buildings?

Wait, methinks they are Hudson & Allen. Nice paint job!

SBG is so good for shield wall warfare.

What makes is good for that? I have an older version and nothing stood out to me as particularly apropos. And it being GW brings a lot of baggage, like a new version of the rules every movie.

The building are Hudson & Allen. I've had them for 20 years or so. I don't use them a lot, but they have held up well.

@Xintao,

If you can find old copies of the Wargames Journal, an early article entitled "Sibling Rivalry" has some early Medieval stats. Lowering Defense values by 1 makes LOTR SBG play a little quicker.

@The Gonk,
Those that like LOTR SBG seem to appreciate the straightforward, nuts and bolts approach of the game. New players pick it up quickly. You don't need the latest version of the rules to appreciate the ease with which one can modify these rules to suit an alternate genre or or add house rules.

Since Middle Earth is essentially in the Dark Ages of its own, the game works well for that. At it's core, it's about warriors and individual efforts of the warrior-heroes. The stuff you make sagas out of.

@The Gonk,
Basically it rewards Shield wall tactics (or how I imagine them, I'm neither an expert or a simulationist) we used SBG for large low magic battles, these mostly involved big formations of guys with shields at the front and spears at the back, the challenge was to break the line.

It's not really how the game was sold, but we enjoyed playing it this way. Also as religon said it's very stra GH ht forward.
