With all of the Reaper Bones I have now as well as a bunch of other odds and ends I've been thinking about small scale fantasy gaming more. My oldest boy is old enough we've been doing a lot of Heroquest. To be honest I'm pretty tired of plain Heroquest so we've just stepped up to Advanced Heroquest. I used to play a lot of Mordheim but there's a few things about it I'm not crazy about any more. I still have several warbands and wouldn't mind using them in another game. So I'm wondering what's out there that people would recommend as a substitute for these. I've played Descent a couple of times and it's more expensive and more complicated than I'm looking for. I've been thinking of checking out Song of Blades and Heroes but haven't yet. Anything else out there worth looking in to? |

I haven't gotten into dungeon crawling rules yet.. but like you, I started my skirmish gaming with Mordheim (mainly due to being in Warhammer and 40k for well over a decade). There are some skirmish rules out there that I briefly touched because it had dungeon crawl potential.. mainly those from 2 Hour Wargames. Ultimately I've focused more on Song of Blades and Heroes, Ares, and most recently Skulldred. The reason I chose these games is because I think they're the best universal rules that balance simplicity while still having racial differences. There were other systems that had neat mechanics for automatic troop reaction tables that allowed for both solo and dungeon crawling experience, but ultimately where they failed for me was that the only thing really differentiating them was their equipment and maybe another stat and how they react on the table. I'm a sucker for racial diversity in my fantasy. |

If it may be a boardgame, the new Dungeons & Dragons dungeoncrawlers seem to be decent if lacking in depth. I think they are called Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Arshdalon and something about Drizz't. |

Brink of Battle, they have a fantasy supplement on the way (or it still may be the free ashcan version). |

Savage Worlds RPG works nicely for dungeon crawling and skirmishing. There's also a freebie pdf Dungeoncrawl, and mods for that from Noah of HAWKS: TMP link |

Another Song of Blades and Heroes + Song of Gold and Darkness vote (the other expansions are worth checking out too). |

Savage Worlds works great as a miniatures based semi-rpg game. I also liked Song of Blades, but Savage Worlds has just a bit more customization to it. |

Follow up on your inclination toward Song of Blades and Heroes, then check back for recommendations if you decide SBH is not for you. It is the rules I would use. |

I ended up buying 4 of the SOBH books to try out. They're cheap enough in pdf form. Now I need to sit down, read and try them out. |

You also have the Goalsystem Delves, quite neat if I may say so! |

Warrior Heroes: Armies and Adventures from Two Hour Wargames works well, has rules for warbands and a dungeon generator so no GM is needed. |
