I started this campaign about a year ago and it is finally completed. It was played solely online by players I've never met face-to-face, just online (3 German and 3 Soviet), living in 3 countries around the globe. I extracted a small section from a large board game to make the strategic map, where the scale is 5 miles to the hex. The map and the rules and general situation can be found here, as well as the players moves between battles, though the latter might be hard to follow. There was a lot of messaging via email, all of which passed thru me, the GM, to make sure no one received messages that was not within range, etc. Then there will be links to the 9 battles that resulted from the players' movements on the main map. Busy? Well, as I say, it was spread over about a year. |

Who won? I suspect the Germans. |

Yes. As I told each player at the end of the campaign: "I won't try to recapitulate all losses on both sides at this time. My impression is that Soviet losses were tremendous and German losses were moderate. No German player characters were KIA. The Soviets lost the following player characters: Battle #3 – Chris P. as Senior Lieutenant Adrinchic Battle #4 – Glen as Kapitan Vinogradov Battle #5 – Glen as Sub-Lieutenant Lyaponov Battle #6 – Chris P. as Sub-Lieutenant Kosigan Battle #7 – Norm as Kapitan Rostopchin Battle #9 – Chris P. as Sergeant Lutikov Battle #9 – Chris P. as Sgt. Krapotkin (yes, twice in the same battle!) In view of these losses and the key hexes held by the Germans, I have to declare the campaign a decisive German victory." |

Monumental effort Don! Im still trying to piece together what happened from the game links. I can't believe Norm was the least killed of the russkie commanders
Thanks for all the work you put into this -- the models and terrain were excellent too. |

It's hard to piece it all together. Since it happened over an extended time, I have a hard time putting it all into perspective and figuring out what went wrong for the Soviets and right for the Germans. A few things I remember: 1. Glen, as CO of the Soviet infantry and acknowledged Soviet leader, was at first unduly (as it turned out) concerned about the area around Bogushevsk. 2. I was surprised that Jeff, as senior German CO, did not give each player more in the way of all-arms KGs, at least at first. He went into Senno with nothing but motorized infantry and got chased out by T-34s. 3. Gradually the Germans fed more and more units to Doug, who was kicking Ivan backsides around Beshenkovichi. 4. Chris P. made the mistake of going south of Beshenkovichi, putting himself out of supply so long as the Germans held that city and Senno -- which they did. 5. The Soviet players tended to ride around in very thinly armored vehicles (or in Glen's case, on foot) and get themselves killed. The German players were also in thinly armored halftracks and light tanks, but stayed back out of the action most of the time. Most of their units had radios and could keep them informed of what was going on. The Soviets had to get up front to see for themselves. 6. The Soviets started losing their few long-range radios and thus lost touch with each other. 7. At my ground scale of 1 foot = 50 meters on my 5'x8' table, almost all tank engagements were at close range (10 feet or less), except a very few at point blank range (less that 2 feet). I was originally worried about whether the Germans would have a reasonable chance of handling the big T-34s and KV-1s, but I read that the Soviets were very short of AT ammo in '41, so I gave the Soviets in this campaign only 3 AT rounds per tank. I thought it might occur to them to transfer rounds from the 45mm ATGs to the T-26s and BT-7s, but they didn't. I gave the Germans a few rounds of Panzergranate 40 APCR ammo. In the final battle a Pz 38(t) took out a T-34 with a pzgr 40 round at point-blank range. Fortunately for it, the shot hit the turret (2 chances in 6), giving it a 67% chance of a kill. In that same battle, a Panzerjager I took out a KV-1 with an APCR round at PB range, when it had a 50% change of a kill. 8. Glen, realistically, chose to die fighting rather than retreat, even though I, as one of his non-player characters, kept tying to save something from the wreckage for later use. My excuse, had he ever asked that character, was going to be that he was trying to save the female medics and radio "men" from capture. |
