I put together a blog page showing plastic toy soldier figures, pressed into service as fantasy miniatures, compared to proper gaming miniatures. I thought this might be useful to other gamers. All are compared against a 28mm Human Barbarian figure, from the D&D pre-paint line. Here is the link. Cheers! |

I have those same cavemen figures that I use for generic giants for my 15's,so you know they tower over them! |

Really nice comparison Sgt Slag. Great find on the cavemen. Also, I painted a bunch of 54mm skeletons for my son. Those are surprisingly great little figures to paint as are the pirates that came in the same bag. |

I actually only painted the non-plastic-colored bits on the Skeletons and Cave Men -- took no time at all, to paint them up! The plastic's color was perfect, after an application of The Dip (Royal Walnut, not Tudor, for my figures). I go for the GEtGW painting quality: Good Enough to Game With. Cheers! |

Thanks for sharing. I have a handful of those 54mm Cavemen. Hill Giants? Interesting

They could also be used for Ogres. I've used them for both, before, depending on what I needed in the game at hand. I've since started using Mage Knight Krugg figures for my Ogres (not canon, for AD&D, but they work for me). Cheers! |

Update: I added some Native American figures from the Toob collection of toys. The set gave me 16 figures, including women and children, to use in my presentation of G1: Steading of the Hill Giants, however, I don't plan to use the women and children -- too much moral trauma, and this is not 1978 anymore. ;-) The robed figure will work nicely as the Chieftain of the Steading. The warriors will work nicely, as well. All are around 54mm tall, so they fit in with the Cave Men, and the Grenadier fantasy figures, quite well. There were also some terrain pieces in the two Toobs I purchased: animal skin stretched on a rack; dugout canoes which are too small for canoes, but they work well enough for log benches, turned over; a campfire -- perfect for the Great Hall; and a bear figure, which will probably be the correct size for a prehistoric Cave Bear. Click on this link, then scroll down the page for the update. Cheers! |
