Just curious to see if anyone has toyed around with this stuff too.

Basically, it looks a lot like thick, flexible plastic fishing line, or fiber optic material, but in addition to just the ends being able to emit light, the entire length of it can as well.

Can't recall what it is called, but I think there are two types, e.g. the cheap stuff that has some sort of liquid in it, like a chem-lite, that can be activated when shaken, and then gives off neon light in various colors for a few hours. People sell that at concerts, fairs, etc, as bracelets, necklaces, etc.

Another, presumably more expensive type, which is more like the fiber optic material, needs a light source, but again, emits light from its sidewalls and ends. It comes in various, bright, neon colors.

I thought it might make for some nice neon signage material, if it can be bent tight enough to spell out various letters, in small scale.

I suspect you can overpaint the outside of the material, to provide any letter separations desired (keep the light from shining through in those spots), or alternatively, I could just make the signs in cursive.

Anyone else played with this stuff for a similar application?

Electroluminescent wire is what you're looking for.

This stuff takes some care in use, as you cannot bend it very much, lest it stop working. My son, who does costuming, had some for a "Tron" suit, and found it somewhat fiddly.

Even more important is that fiber optic material can only bend so far then it breaks. The shards can get into your body and to nasty things. So be careful.
