Nice photos! Great AAR

Nice pictures. However I must admit that I am a bit confused. You state that your opponent said "If it wasn't for the campaign system, we'd have given up on this long ago", but you then say this was your second game, and you gave up the first game because you didn't feel you could win it. So really, if I am reading you correctly, it was the first game you had played through to a conclusion?

Why would anyone want to continue reading after your wholeheartedly negative prologue? To look at the pictures? Also, you've decided that the game is horrible after 2 games yet somehow (as Tin Soldier notes) the campaign is what's kept you interested?

Dux Brit is a ton o fun, I've found it balanced, though it can be hard for the Saxons to advance in the campaign unless the Brit player plays his forces wrong. Example, I used "Bibamus" in my first game and got creamed when my forces couldn't stay in shield wall.

Tin Soldier I tried to explain in this paragraph
"That said we struggled on through a number of games all of which were pleasing on the eye and I took some pictures, so there will now follow a few blog posts with eye candy of the Fall of Elmet campaign"
that this was the first of a few posts (though admittedly that could have been clearer.
We played an entire campaign year of games (five, or possibly six I forget) and it was after the last of these (not the one covered in the blog) that my opponent made his comment.

We did in fact also play the first game to a conclusion. It was just that the random deployment of the objective and a poor role for my initial movement combined with early and fortuitous deployment for my opponent left me facing a dug in enemy in strong defensive position. After some initial skirmishing it was obvious that my only hope of achieving the objective would have resulted in huge casualties – so I withdrew as in a campaign those casualties would be significant. Historically accurate no doubt but slightly unsatisfactory as a gaming experience.

axabrax I have no idea why people read anything I post.
:)
In this case I had some pretty pictures I wanted to share – but if the first paragraph puts you off feel free to click elsewhere.
Not sure that its wholeheartedly negative – I clearly acknowledge that some other people are having a great time with the rules, just that they don't seem to suit me – something I am more disappointed about that enraged by.
Also as noted I didn't play two games before arriving at my decision – I feel I gave the game a fair chance but its simply not for me.
Finally I don't think I've said anywhere that the game is horrible – just that it isn't right for me and my opponent.

SBminisguy I didn't find it hard for my Saxons – in fact the campaign seemed to work in my favour as once I'd got the Brits on the back foot by winning a game I could keep up the pressure by continued raiding – at the end of the campaign year I'd advanced up the promotional ladder, added a few troops and was in the driving seat.
Also interested that you used Bibamus in your first game – I thought that card was only for the pitched battles, not the raids – or did you kick of your learning the game with a pitched battle?

Yeah, we kicked off the campaign with a battle, I got creamed in one of those funny " can't make a roll to save my life" games. Like when my levy broke shield wall to charge and impale themselves on Saxon spears. As the Brit player I've found that I can usually roadblock the Saxons with well supported Shieldwalls, making it tough to meet objectives for them.
