"It was in a stairway closet," Dorothy Smoke said. "It was an old house, there were a lot odd things in there." Now I'm curious – I wonder what other "odd things" were in that closet with the diary

I can't believe that the Washington State Archives would turn down such a find! At least the Kentucky Historical Society has their head on straight. Jim (who works at the Mississippi State Archives) |

Not all war – we're 100% behind those fought for good reasons, like livestock. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_War |

Anyone up for wargaming the Pig War? |

I dont see the connection. Why would it be offered to the University of Washington? We are a long way away from Ohio, or Kentucky. Surely it would have made more sense to ofer it to a local group. As for the Pig war, lets go with that. I am sitting less than a mile from George Pickets house that he lived in at that time. I would love to do a pig war game at our anual game in Col Caseys house, but have never got off of my butt to do it. Owen |

I dont see the connection. Why would it be offered to the University of Washington? Because it was discovered in a house in Arlington, WA (30 miles north of Seattle). The UW being our local bastion of higher learning, the diary was offered to them and the WA State archives. |

"The Arlington genealogists contacted the University of Washington and the Washington State Archives, but neither institution had time or money to make digital copies." Sounds like a money thing more than anything else. Great find! |

The odd things also in the closet (hermetically sealed and in mint condition) include the diary writer's uniform, rifle, pistol, sabre, regimental flag plus 5 others he had taken off the field, numerous photos, belts

I read just a few pages of it! Very interesting! A day by day account with sometimes just a brief word, but I've never seen anything quite as thorough as this. I'm going to have to download it all and read it now. |

I read the whole thing! It was interesting that his unit was issued Russian muskets which were exchanged for Prussian muskets which were exchanged for Austrian muskets
