i have a lot of 28mm MDF buildings and need to know what colour to use.the buildings are being used for Dublin 1916.but the designs are obviously the same as british of the same period.i am looking for the reddy brown colour.GW are readily available but if there is something better i would go for that.any advice would be great. cheers john |

I don't know the colors but I'd use cheap craft paint for big surfaces like this rather than premium miniature paint. |

City buildings in 1916 were quite heavily coated in coal soot. Native brick colours depend on the local clay. Current day images will show you the range of brick colours: link But for 1916, there would only be traces of those showing through a streaky top coat of grimy gray-black. |

Just looking at miniMo's link, it confirms my suspicions based on where I live in the states. We've got a lot of brick buildings from same time period. There's no standard color here. Red, brown, yellow brick all feature even on the same block. Even in the same color, you get all kinds of shades. And I'd echo flashman14
you're going to spend a lot more money for no added benefit if you go to model/game paints. If I had a _lot_ of brick buildings to paint I'd probably experiment with a couple of spray cans. I've always wanted an excuse to try liquitex's spray paints, this would be all the excuse I'd need. |

By strange happenstance I have my project journal with me. The colors I used last were: Base coat of: Apple Barrel: Barn Red (2604) The wet pallette mix of the following: Americana:Tomato Red (DA169),Burt Sienna(DA063),Heritage Brick (DA219) Country Road (DA018) Craftmart: Brick Red(CS136), Wine (CS128) Social Artwork (DecoArt): Burt Sienna (SA18) The results can bee seen here:
From my little "How-To" here: linkDo not have a finished shot but some basic idea of what I was going for, a fast and east brick effect. |

I paint the entire building black (usually spray paint with flat black). Once the black base coat is dry, I drybrush the bricks with Vallejo Hull Red. When the Hull Red is dry, I drybrush that with Vallejo Tan Earth to give it some age. That's about it. I did a lot of it in my Germany 1945 Gallery. You can see the results in pics 18, 27, 34, 37, 38, 52, 53, and 60 at link |

Peter, thank you. Those two WWII galleries took a lot of time (especially the Germany 1945 Gallery), but I had a lot of fun doing them, and I'm really glad you enjoyed them. Kind words are always really appreciated. Richard |
