I have a collection of 1/2400 WW2 Japanese ships involved in the Indian Ocean raids of 1942 with extras. While I understand that the prefixes "IJN" and "HMJS" were not used by Japan did they still allocate a specific ID number to each ship and if so where might I find such a list.

Ian Allen Publishing did a series of small format books on the ships of the Navies of World War Two. Others on the boards may have more precise memories, but I'm thinking these were all published at least thirty five years ago…. I had them all once upon a time, but now, only my US Navy copy remains.

I've looked, out of curiosity, from time to time, but I haven't even seen them up on eBay.

The Japanese title would definitely have had what you were looking for.

I believe the ship names/numbers were painted out on the hulls during the war, however, many still carried the funnel markings.

Each ship had it's name painted on the fantail. A number was also carried on each side of the bow.

Hi all, thanks for your comments. I was aware the numbers would be painted out in wartime but they would still be used for signalling to particular ship. I was planing to use them as ID numbers on the bases to save space but can't find a listing of what ship had what number. An example of what I'm after is the USS Iowa and her sisters New Jersey, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois and Kentucky; being BB61, BB62, BB63, BB63, BB64, BB65 & BB66 respectively (the last two uncompleted). The preceding South Dakota BB's had the numbers 57 – 60.
To DuckanCover thanks for the tip on Ian Allen books found the Japanese one on ABE Books

IJN DDs bow numbers were division markings, not individual ship numbers as in the USN. All ships in each division carried the same number.
