Looks interesting. The area is about five hours drive from my house. And I have done a reenactment at Ft. Branch, not far from the areas described in the book. Thanks for the posting, mi amigo. |

I've been vacationing there since 1976 and a good buddy of mine lives in that town (now known by the more prosaic name Salvo). The locals tended to be pro-Union, since they had few slaves and made their living from the sea. When the Union forces retreated, the column included many local civilian refugees. The Confederate troops from the mainland looted their houses in revenge. There is a monument further down the island with the names of locals who served during the war. At the top are three who were pilots for the US Navy. Then there are 18 lines of names of those who served in the first and second North Carolina, followed by the 3 lines of names of those who served in state regiments. Only ACW buffs (like me) would know that the first and second NC served in blue uniforms. Fort Hatteras was claimed by the ocean many years ago. In fact, the ocean was working on it before the USN took it. |
