Nice painting job, and I like the plexiglass bases, too. And you gave it a very appropriate sense of atmosphere.

Very well done!

I wasn't quite able to figure out from the posts on the coastal actions, is Flotilla Forward a set of campaign rules like the awesome Platoon and Squadron Forwards, or tactical rules?

If they are campaign rules, that would be great to see. After playing Coastal Patrol at a con, I picked up a ton of ships and that would be incentive to bump them up on the schedule.

Tuscaloosa and Joe,
Thank you for the kind words. The Finnish are not entirely accurate but certainly look the part! Found a Japanese sub chaser that will look even better.

Understand your confusion. Yes these will be similar to the awesome Platoon and Squadron Forward rules. :) For the coastal craft you will command 6 boats. You will roll up your mission and then see if you can accomplish it. There will be similar interactions and it will probably play more like Squadron Forward. Am still figuring out the hidden enemy at the beginning of the game. Have several ideas that I am playtesting. Watch the blog as I will discuss them as I try them each out. For Destroyers (as an American I want to game "the slot") am torn between commanding 4 ships or just one ship with several officers as characters. Any thoughts on what you want to see? As with anything, won't release it until I think it is awesome too!

Thanks

Joe

Joe,
Looks awesome, I love it! You mentioned doing the Slot; I plan on getting into that as well, and I think Flotilla Forward would be a great way to go. I haven't bought any boats yet (got a lot of stuff going on right now!), and I need to find some rules as well, but it certainly is on the list.

Along those lines, I intend on starting some WWII Brit vs. Germans with Platoon Forward (which I've had for about a year and a half), probably using Chain of Command.

Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing more batreps and the release of Flotilla Forward.

V/R,
Jack

Hmmm. The Soviets are wondering where the Finns got a Raven class…:)

The 'Foward' series generate a bunch of scenarios for different rulesets but both Squadron and Platoon forward seem to link well to a TFL set – is there a TFL ruleset that the Flotilla Forward rules will link to that you have in mind, I seem to remember a Special with a coastal game in?

Joe Legan29 Aug 2013 1:48 p.m. PST

Jack,

Thank you for the kind words. Positive feedback does give me incentive to slog through this stuff. Let me know how PF works for you.

Dave,
Well done sir! I am told it was a gift from a McCarthy group. It will be substituted for by a figurehead Japanese subchaser soon!

myrm11

No. I do have a ruleset that I am using that might get published. Right now I would recommend Dave Manley's Schnell rules for Schnell Boots. They are free. There was a special with Coastal Rules in them 2-3 specails back.

Cheers

I have a soft spot for the Finns. The VMVs were tough customers. Te even pinch hit as MTBs in 1941.

Joe Legan01 Sep 2013 3:32 p.m. PST

I just like fighting the off beat stuff in WW II.
Ran my Russian G5s against german TBs. German radar apparently wasn't working as the Russkies snuck up on them. 8 boats fired and one actually hit. ( I give the russians -1 due to historically they rarely seem to hit.) Wrecked the TB but stayed afloat. If I get a chance might run a Bag the Hun scenario to see if I can take it out!

Never heard of the VMVs launching torpedos. Did they just roll them off? What were there targets? See a scenario brewing here.

Cheers

Joe

Where can I get a copy of these rules?

Joe Legan25 Jun 2019 6:18 p.m. PST

For those of you that want to read the AAR it is here:

Wow I guess I have been working on Flotilla Forward longer than I remember.
huevans, short answer is the rules are 75% done. All that I have left is to test the scenarios. I am going with the "blinds" approach of platoon forward rather than the roll up the enemy forces of squadron forward. The trick is to get a balanced game 80% of the time but leave room for surprises.
I never published my tactical rules "Release the Hounds" as there always seemed to be something missing. They were good but not great. Cruel Seas with my mods plays faster and is more fun.
Thanks for the memories and the push!

Joe

PS You can see I have always been fascinated with the Russian Navy.

huevans01102 May 2021 6:44 p.m. PST

Joe, any update on the Flotilla Forward rules?

And have you got anything else in the hopper?

(I apologize if this is poor taste and timing on my part because of the current health crisis).

Joe Legan02 Jun 2021 6:14 a.m. PST

huevans,
Flotilla forward is done! I just need to pretty it up and get it ready for publication. unfortunately I really dont have anything else in the hopper right now. open to ideas. hope to have Flotilla out by end of summer. Also want to thank everyone for their support. was able to donate over $1,000 USD to our local food bank last year.
thanks
